About the Campaign

An alarming statistic of 50,000 homeless young people in Australia caught the attention of Aspect Legal’s Managing Director, Joanna Oakey, which is why she is participating in the ‘Chatswood Sleeps Rough’ campaign to help raise $3,000 for the Salvation Army and Streetwork.

“I have a big goal by sleeping rough for one night and my goal is to raise $3,000 which will help provide one-on-one mentoring sessions for homeless youth so they can access much-needed services and support to ensure they are not sleeping rough any longer, and to help to provide accommodation, food and on-going casework for families in need.”Joanna Oakey

All funds raised go to straight to StreetWork and Salvation Army to support them in their projects, and in particular, to get people off the street. StreetWork is a non-denominational, for-purpose, community organisation working with ‘at risk’ young people affected by crime, mental health issues, violence, destructive relationships, social isolation, homelessness, those disengaged from school or with poor employment opportunities and those impacted by alcohol and substance abuse, to turn their lives around. The Salvation Army Australia is an international  movement, giving hope where it’s needed most. Across Australia – in cities, country towns and rural communities – their work touches every demographic and age group.  They are involved in national issues while also bringing hope to people who may be experiencing hardship or injustice.

We would absolutely love you to join us and come along and set up your own campaign to sleep rough with us in Chatswood. But if you can’t do that, then we would absolutely love it if you could, and would be so grateful if you can donate to our campaign. To donate, just click the donate button above.

For all donors, we will keep you up-to-date with lots of pictures of Joanna is sleeping out!

My deepest gratitude to you for highlighting this terrible problem that shouldn’t even exist in our rich economy. I’ll be on the streets with you, albeit in spirit.

It’s great to see fellow lawyers supporting the homeless and I feel I should be there myself. In this day and age, with such affluence, it is a national disgrace of gargantuan proportions, that we leave our young at risk of self-harm, depression, addiction, homelessness and out of work.

This is a job the government should be doing but is left to charities and not for profits and to people such as those who are going to sleep out for the night to find out what is really like, well not really, to be homeless to provide support.

Probably most of us who donate don’t have children who have left home because they are not wanted, or their parents are warring, or they have a mental illness or whatever, to sleep on the streets, or hopefully not. There are so many things in Australia that are objectionable in this day and age that could be addressed by money from federal and state budgets but probably the most challenging and most disgraceful is the way we treat our young and also equally importantly the way we treat our indigenous population.

When I was studying law and driving a taxi I used to take men to the Matthew Talbot hostel in a mad dash to get in before the curfew, into facility that was even then overcrowded. These were decent people who through no fault of their own were living in crisis accommodation.

So I’m with you all the way and I wish you the very best. If I can find a way to join you I will be there.

    Congratulations to all of you.
